The first redwing was seen searching for rowan berries on the trees around the football pitch, unfortunately there were very few to be had. It has not been a good year for the flowers therefor no berries in many places.
Migrating thrushes rely on fruit as they travel south across Britain. Hawthorn on uncut hedges; Holly, which needs male and female plants to produce berries; Berberis kinds, especially ‘Darwinii’, usually unfortunately trimmed to destruction instead of being allowed to grow into a small tree; Rose hips, Dog Rose, Rugosa, particularly “Hansa” and R.Moyesii a 5′ high easy to maintain shrub.
